Sicily We(A)st tour

palermo-cattedraleThe discovery of Sicily from Palermo to Catania crossing an area marked by cultures and traditions that still continue today and that are the pride of this land.

Program

8 days / 7 nights

from Palermo to Catania

1st day - Palermo
Arrival at the airport  of  Palermo, free time and Dinner

2nd  day –  Palermo  > Monreale
Breakfast and visit of Palermo, the regional capital of Sicily, one of the richest towns in history and art. You will visit the Cathedral, the church of St. John of the Hermits, the  Palace of Normans and the Palatine Chapel inside it. You then proceed to Monreale where you will visit the 12th century Cathedral with its dazzling interior of multi-coloured marbles, paintings, mosaics and cloisters

3rd day - Bagheria > Cefalù
Breakfast and visit of the town centre of Bagheria, whose importance is due to the baroque villas dating back to the 17th and 18th century. The most beautiful villas are Villa Palagonia, built in 1715 by the Prince Gravina from Palagonia and Villa Cattolica. The tour continues to Cefalù, a charming bathing town and a widely known tourist centre, famous for its artistic and monumental jewels: the Norman Cathedral, the elegant Cloister dating back to the 12th century and the suggestive Medieval Wash-house totally dug into the rock. Free time for shopping

4th day  - Segesta > Erice >  Marsala
Breakfast and departure for Segesta, where you will enjoy the view of the imposing Temple and  Theatre. The tour goes on with the visit of Erice, a little and fascinating  medieval town situated on the top of the Mount Saint Julian. The Cathedral with its wonderful tower and the narrow roads of this typical medieval village are particularly relevant. Next, you will travel to Marsala, known for its fine wine and its salt pans, where the windmills are reflected in the basins for the extraction of the salt. Marsala is the famous town where Garibaldi landed with his famous “Mille” (The Thousand) in 1860.

5th day –  Selinunte > Agrigento
Breakfast and departure for Selinunte, the biggest archaeological park in the Mediterranean sea. The town is situated near the mouth of the river where the wild parsley (Selinon) grows, the plant that gives the name both to the town and to the river. Selinunte is full of columns and remains of huge Greek temples.  Along the way to Agrigento, the visit of a winery will give you the possibility of tasting the “nectar of Bacchus”, which is the fruit of this land. In the afternoon  you will proceed to Agrigento for a close up view of the Valley of the Temples, the most important archaeological site in Sicily. Get an in-depth look at the Temple of Concord, the Temple of Hercules, the Temple of Juno and the Temple of Castor and Pollux.

6th day –  Siracusa >  Noto
Breakfast and departure for Siracusa, the most beautiful and biggest Greek colony in Sicily. You will visit the archaeological park of Neapolis, the monuments of the island of Ortigia with its famous Aretusa Fountain, the  Latomia of the Heaven and the suggestive Ear of Dionysus whose acoustics produces extraordinary effects. An optional tour on the boat around the island of Ortigia is also available. Next, you will travel to Noto, a famous town declared property of the humanity by UNESCO because of its huge artistic heritage and cradle of Baroque in the East Sicily.

7th day –  Etna > Taormina
Breakfast and departure for an excursion to mount Etna, the highest volcano in Europe, a real giant dominating and “protecting” the East Sicily. You will arrive at 2000 metres above sea level, travelling along streets that cross lava tongues of ancient eruptions, and you will enjoy the breathtaking view of the Ionian coast of Sicily. It is possible, if someone wants, to reach the top of the highest craters at 3000 metres above the sea level by Jeep or by cableway. In the afternoon you will go to Taormina, known for its beautiful monuments and gardens. Enjoy viewing the Greek Theatre and Corso Umberto. Free time for shopping

8th day –  Catania > departure

An island in the middle of the Mediterranean:

For its central position in the Mediterranean Sea, its remarkable size and its fertile territory, Sicily has always been the best destination for those people who, after having landed on its shores, have settled there and here have remained. These are the reasons for which Sicily has never lost its attraction and interest, and for which it is a place to visit and experience in all its aspects, from the most famous to the less known and predictable . ...continued
