Greek culture in Sicily

Segesta-teatroSicily is full of greeks colonies, of whom we still have archeological treasures that we can discover into a suggestive tour.

Program

8 days/ 7 nights

 

1st day :arrival > Catania
Arrival to Catania  airport, transfer in hotel and spare time.

 

2nd day: Giardini Naxos > Taormina
Breakfast, transfer  in Giardini Naxos, first colon in Sicily founded in 734 b.c. Taormina then, where we ll show us the beautiful medieval streets and the Roman -Greek theatre, the first  spectacular monument, built by Greeks  ( III sec b.c.), it was rebuilt by Romans.  Roman- Greek theatre was one of the most important centre in Sicily during the greek domination.

3rd day: Catania > Lentini
Breakfast, visit of the historical centre in Catania. Even this city is situated down the mounth Etna and in past times was covered by lava flows , ther e is still rests coming from Greek and  Roman ages, evidence of a rich and florid past times. Following those traces , the excursion go on with the visit of Lentini,  situated in the south area of Sicily. Inside  the archeological park of Lentini it is possible to see , near to the San Mauro ‘ hill, some rests of the powerful enclosing walls, some rests of a necropolis dates back IV-III sec b.c. and some rests of a greek temple.

 

4th day: Megara Iblea > Siracusa
Breakfast then departure for  Siracusa, but first we ll stop at Megara Iblea, an archeological area far from Siracusa, an ideal place for making  “A dive into the past”, an old greek colon that have maintained his original urban system. The day still going on to Siracusa, the more beautiful and big colon in Sicily. The archeological park in Neapolis, best place ever of this city. The visit ends in the Ortigia Island.

 

5th day: Morgantina > Agrigento
Breakfast then departure for  Morgantina, one of the most interesting archeological sites, but unfortunately not very popular in Sicily. The city, before being colonized by Greeks, had preistorical installations. It is developed on a little plain, delimitated by hills.Not very far from  Morgantina, the archeological museum of Aidone, keep the “ Dea” of  Morgantina, a goddess sculptured in the  V sec B.C.. The autor should be a Fidia ‘ s pupil in Sicily, where he come back after several giudiric problems. The excursion keep going in Agrigento , coming on time before the sunset to enjoy the scenary!!! .The “Valle dei Templi”is the more important archeological area of Sicily.

 

6th day Selinunte > Segesta
Breakfast then departure for Selinunte, the biggest archeological park of the Mediterranea, made up by columns and ruins of greeks temple. The city is situated close to the river , where still growns particular type of parsley ( Selinon), that gaves the name to the riverand to the city.The visit still going on to Cave di Cusa, once upon a time exploited to built Selinunte, we ll give you the chance to admire and temples and necropolis. The excursion still going on to Segesta, to join the view of the impressive “Tempio Solitario”and of the Theatre, that it is developed over a big impressive view dominated byy the mounth Inici.

 

 

7th day:  Solunto > Termini Imerese
Breakfast, in the morning visit to Solunto, situated on  the south-oriental layers of the “ Catalfano “ Mounth, close to the seaside area to the Ovest  side of Palermo, outstretched to the sea side, in a position of rare and impressive beauty. Archeological rests are related to the city of the ellenist.roman age. The trip goes for the archeological siteof Himera, greek colon,along the tyrrhenian sicilian costa  in the centre of a wide gulf, through Cefalù and Termini Imerese ‘  promontories.

 

8th day : Palermo > departure
Breakfast, spare time until the departure
